The Great Fires which started around Knysna on the 7th of June 2017 may be a distant memory already for those who have not been directly affected by it. We realize this as our guests do no longer ask questions about the fires. The forestry workers are taking down burnt trees, the Working on Fire teams are assisting and further stabilizing slopes, AfriForum is slowly but surely replanting and seeding new vegetation, the demolition teams are working long hours and so are the builders, while support groups are feeding birds, making sure there are honeybees which can help with pollination, and Mother Nature gets the chance to find her own balance again.
The Knysna Country House has contributed by producing beautifully embroidered towels with the #KnysnaRises logo, which depicts a Knysna loerie rising –as a Phoenix – from the ashes. Not only does part of the proceeds go to the fire victims, it gives our guests a nice momentum of their stay in Knysna, while helping those who have been directly affected.
Something else we’re doing is collecting our empty milk bottles. How this makes a difference is somebody else’s life? We donate those empty milk bottles to a local lady who uses them as planting trays for clivia’s. She has planted over 700 clivia seeds in empty milk bottles, and is nurturing them to grow into small plants. Once the seedlings are slightly bigger, they will be replanted into their own empty milk bottle, and in a couple of months they will be big enough to be planted into the garden.
Into newly established gardens, around newly built homes, bringing new color into the lives of people who may have lost everything in the fires.
At the same time it fits in nicely with our philosophy of trying to reduce waste. And save water. And re-use where we can! All in all a good story, if you ask us!
So, by having milk in your coffee or cereals over breakfast, you make a difference….. Thanks for being our guests!
